the ubiquitous mix tape

in response to a recent post by sabominator, I would like to take this afternoon to reflect on days gone by. The tender, troubled days of high school. I don’t have a lot of time this week, so let me just give you my playlist circa 1995.

“My Kick-Ass Music Mix” (note the beavis and butthead reference as well as the deft use of alliteration)
– Closer (Nine Inch Nails)
– Kick Start My Heart (Motley Crue)
– Sunshine of your Love (the remake by Living Color)
– Closer to your Heart (Rush)
– Don’t Follow (Alice in Chains)
– Wild Nights (John Mellencamp) (???)
– the Sweater Song (Weezer)
– Christian Woman (Type O-Negative)
– Self Esteem (Offspring)
– Memories (from Cats, mind you)
– if I Only Had a Brain (five points for whoever can tell me who made this song)
– Working Man (Rush)
– Today (Smashing Pumpkins)
– What you Doing (Rush)
– Love is Strong (Rolling Stones)
– About a Girl (Nirvana)
– All I Want to Do (Sheryl Crow)
– New Age Girl (Deadeye Dick)
– Stay (Lisa Loeb)

My Damn Music Mix (note the thematic element here)
– Low (Cracker)
– No Excuses (Alice in Chains)
– I Stay Away (Alice in Chains)
– Deuces Are Wild (Aerosmith)
– Pretend that we’re Dead (L7)
– Prison Sex (Tool)
– Loser (Beck)
– Spoonman (Soundgarden)
– Backwater (Meat Puppets)
– Freedom (Rage Against the Machine)
– Kenny & Cleo (Black Market Flowers)
– Kick Start my Heart (Again, for some reason I’d rather not ponder)
– Burned on the Sacred Ground
– ALl that she Wants (Ace of Base)
– Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana)
– What’s Up (4 Non-Blondes)

I loved making Mix tapes. I made them all through college too, until my car got totaled and I had to buy a car with a CD player. I have the “Californicated 2001” traveling mix, the “Phish Blues and Jazz” chillin’ mix, and a bunch of other ones with witty titles that I can’t conjure at the moment. I think I’m going to try to recreate the mix tapes with ipod playlists.

maybe not these specific mix tapes, but you know.
